So here’s a quick story that has an important lesson..
I was eating dinner last night with some friends at a restaurant in Hollywood. Lo and behold, who sits in the booth next to us, but Peter Murphy.
After dinner, we went to a record store near the restaurant. On the wall were some Bauhaus records. I realized how funny it was that the people working there and everyone in the store, many of which I am certain were fans, had no clue that he was a few hundred feet away eating dinner.
Just goes to show – it’s a SMALL world, and you never know who you are going to meet or run into. Be prepared – have business cards, have a short “self-sales” speech ready to go… And never underestimate how humorous the Universe can be.

So here’s another one for you up and coming music industry moguls –
Get A Professional Sounding Email Address!
If you are in the position of sending out resumes, giving out your address to potential employers, or just looking to be taken seriously in general, it is important your email address sends the right message.
You don’t need john.q.smith@someimportantcompany.com, but ILuv2Smoke420@anarchyrulez.com is not going to cut it. I cringe every time one of my students shows me their resume and they have that type of email address on it.
With the plethora of free email providers out there, there is NO excuse not to have a business address. Sure, keep your personal account – it is important to retain a sense of your self – but also open a professional sounding account at a free provider that you can put on resumes.
The best route to go is something involving your name. Although AlexJohnsonMusicMaker@gmail.com is somewhat professional, AlexJohnson@gmail.com is MUCH more. Leave out the extra verbage, just stick with the basics. Believe me, this can make the difference in getting a call back.
