Information Junkie
I am such an information junkie. You should see how many magazines I subscribe to. I must get no less than 15 different magazines every month. Everything from music to health to computers to wine to politics to adult (huuuuuuuge Playboy collection).
The funny thing is that I rarely read them.
I realized the other night why I subscribe to so many mags yet only leaf through most. It’s the same reason every time I stop into a Starbucks attached to a bookstore, I have to buy a few books from the bargain rack – I am an Information Junkie.
As are many of you. The Internet has enabled the IJ generation to flourish and have an unending supply of data. Given my profession, I get plenty of information via the ‘net during the day, but I guess I like to surround myself with even more info when I go home.
You should see the stacks of magazines I have around. That’s the other thing – I have a hard time throwing information away! My fiancee is not terribly thrilled about that.
Any of you IJs too?
I think I will let the boxes full of Rolling Stone, Spin, Music Connection, Entreprenuer, Details, Home Office Computing, Guitat World and a dozen local rags attest to the fact that I am both an information junkie and, like you, one that does not throw information away.
I have pared down my clutter, however, everytime I have moved to a new pad, donating magazines and papers I know I have no use for to the library or the trash bin. Of course, now that I have a garage and no plans to move for a few years, look out!
It’s nice to know there are other info junkies out there. I went to Barns and noble last night and bought four magazines and a bargin book for a $1. It was $1! How could I pass that up? I have a shelf with mags on them but wait it gets worse. I clip articles I want to keep and when that got out of hand I started glueing them into blank book in my spare time. Do I go back and read those articles? No but maybe one day I will. My greatest guilty pleasure are the overseas magazines that cost almost $10. Last night I bought the world music magazine Songlines which is pricey but comes with a free CD with every issue. Ah magazines. Thanks.
I too am an info junkie -hence looking for information on other info junkies! I have about 1000 magazines in the garage and I am on a mission to get rid of each one – but I can’t do this without looking thru each one! I have a hip-high pile (I am not very tall tho – luckily) of articles which need to be filed. Where? How? Don’t know yet. Will worry about that when I get thru the mags. How long will that be? Well – I have a little spreadsheet going which I update each time I clear a magazine. This is a little program which calculates the rate that I am clearing them, and when I will finish. Right now am on track for around mid-2010! Crazy huh! By the way I don’t include new magazines in my count of what I am clearing. Those are separate. I try not to look at magazines in newsagents otherwise I will end up buying more than I can clear. All my friends say they are so glad they are not like me!
