While its definately necessary to keep things updated, new and fresh to keep your audience interested and inspired, I think you have to keep your theme /vibe / look, and maintain your "brand image".
A combination of 'branding' and image consistency with fresh ideas, in my opinion is most effective in attracting and more importantly keeping an interested fanbase. It creates assurance that your fans can expect something they are familiar with, whilst providing something new and exciting to look forward to.
My favourite bands / labels / albums, have always tended to have a theme, image and general vibe throughout their catalogs.
