Wow – my marketing company has five CDs in the Top 30 Jazz sales charts this week –
#8 (Jazz Vocalists V/A)
#18 (Christian Scott)
#23 (Erin Boheme)
#24 (Mimi Fox)
#27 (Taylor Eigsti)
I guess that means we market jazz. Hah!
It’s interesting. I am a metal and punk guy. I worked for a punk label and a musician’s musician label that was mostly rock. About two years ago I owned no more than 5 jazz CDs. Fast forward to now and I’d say at any given time 50% of my projects are jazz!! How did this come to be??
Well, that’s not as exciting a story as the concept at play – you don’t always dictate what direction you go in this biz, but if you are savvy you’ll latch on to good opportunities and make something out of it. I am very fortunate that so many great record labels have seen something in us enough to repeatedly hire us. The fact that many of the records have been jazz was not a deterrent to me, but rather a challenge – I knew I could successfully market a Steve Vai guitar record, but could I get people aware of and interested in a 19-year old female jazz vocal ingĂ©nue? Well, turns out the answer is yes!
Bonus – I am finally starting to appreciate jazz at the level I have appreciated other genres for the better part of 20 years. About time, eh??
So, don’t turn away from an opportunity just because it isn’t necessarily in line with your normal course of operations. Opportunity comes disguised as many, many things!
