Just giving you all a heads up that I’ll be at SXSW from Tues – Sun, so I need to know what the good shows and parties are going to be! Please leave comments with any must-see bands, any great parties, etc…

Usually when I teach in the Music Business Program at Musicians Institute, I’m the one instilling the knowledge. But the other day some students gave me a useful idea. Let’s call it the Quality Triangle. It goes as such:

The concept is simple. You get two of the three. As in, if you want something done fast and cheap, it won’t be good. If you want it good and fast, it won’t be cheap. If you want it cheap and good, it won’t be fast….
It’s simple but brilliant and an eye-opening concept. Think about how it applies to what you do.

Any of you reading this for a while know that I love vinyl records. Maybe it’s my youth as a punk or simply my aversion to making things easy, but I prefer most of my music on a nice slab of etched plastic.
This Businessweek article has some interesting info about current vinyl production and sales. To quote:
But vinyl still accounts for a small percentage of total music sales. Last year 858,000 LPs were sold compared with 553.4 million CDs, according to Nielsen SoundScan. While the 2006 figure was up slightly from 2005, the overall trend has been down from 1.5 million in 2000.
For those of you into vinyl, check out a site I run dedicated to collecting records from Murder City Devils and all related bands (Pretty Girls Make Graves, Area 51, Death Wish Kids, etc).

Congrats to George Benson & Al Jarreau, who picked up TWO Grammy awards last night for the CD Givin’ It Up! My marketing company promoted the record last year, so we’re especially happy about this.
