Sorry for my absence. Been traveling, and when back in Los Angeles, been holed up in Steve Vai’s studio working with him on his upcoming DVD. It’s him playing guitar with the 65-piece Metropole Orchestra in Holland. It’s mindblowing. The CD comes out in June, the DVD somewhere around September.
Spent some time in Memphis last week. Other than a car accident leaving Graceland, it was a great time. I had never been to Graceland so that was quite an experience. I noticed a lot of interesting things while there, and somehow brought them all back to marketing in one way or another.
First, for those of you who haven’t been to Elvis’ house, it’s a must-see experience However, it’s not as big and insane as you might expect. Don’t get me wrong, it’s amazing and I’d live there in a heartbeat, but the house itself is nothing compared to the sprawling mansions I pass on Mullholland Drive all the time. What is interesting is that the man knew what he liked and used the space to the max.
Elvis and Graceland show that in this industry, knowing how to best use your content is the path to success. Sure, Elvis has a mass appeal, but you can bet that had he not been marketed the way he was, chose to say what he said, and had a mapped out idea for different projects, he would not have reached the levels he did. As we see day in and day out, talent is not enough – surrounding yourself with the right people, having the right vision, and truly knowing how to give the audience what they want is critical. Elvis and the Colonel knew this well.
Beale Street is fun, saw some amazing blues musicians. Like a one-block Bourbon Street, a great time had by all.
I’m relatively back to real life, I’ll be back to my posting schedule now. Thanks for sticking around!
